What is PrePay billing?

Normally, you receive a utility bill at the end of the month for all of the electricity you used in the past 30 days. PrePay works the opposite. You pay for the electricity before you use it. You can pay ahead as much or as little as you want.

How does it work?

You make payments at your convenience to keep a credit balance on your account. The meter is read each night at midnight and a bill is calculated for yesterday’s usage. If the credit balance drops below a threshold, you are notified that your balance is getting low. If you use up all your credit, then power is shut off until the account has at least a $25 credit balance.

Who can participate in the program?

Members who have a residential electric service that is capable of remote disconnects. Members signing up for the PrePay program will not be eligible for Budget Billing or Automatic Recurring Payments.

How do I make payments on my account?

You can pay online using SmartHub, by phone using the SecurePay phone number, in person at the office or by mail. Only SmartHub or SecurePay payments guarantee an immediate reconnection.

How do I know what my balance is?

You can check your balance online in SmartHub. When you sign up for PrePay, you are required to have an email address to receive your billing alerts. If you sign up for SmartHub Online Services, you can set up text notifications in addition to or in place of email notices. The mobile app for SmartHub has an alert feature on your mobile device.

What if my account runs out?

Your electrical service will be automatically disconnected. Disconnects will not be performed on weekends or holidays. To reconnect the power, you need to pay enough to bring your account to a $25 credit balance. Your power will be automatically restored and you will not be charged any additional fees.


How much money should I keep in my PrePay account?

It’s up to you! Buy energy to last for a few days, a couple of weeks, or several months!
